No decision on lifting suspension of internet

Shillong June 11: No decision has been taken on lifting the suspension of internet facilities on mobile phones, while the district administration of East Khasi Hills did not change the timing for relaxation of curfew in areas under Lumdiengjri police station and imposition of night curfew.

Curfew was relaxed for 11 hours from 7 am to 6 pm on Monday in areas under Lumdiengjri police which include Jaïaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Mawlong Hat including areas under Cantonment Beat House (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge). The same timing will continue on Tuesday.

The timing for night curfew also remained the same from 9pm to 5 am.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioenr said that no decision was to further relax the curfew, and the district administration is monitoring the situation closely.

On lifting the suspension of internet on mobile phones, the DC said that the suspension will continue for another 24 hours, adding that a decision may be taken after assessing the situation.

Earlier, short message service (SMS) on mobile phones was also suspended, but it was restored a few days ago.

Curfew and suspension of internet was imposed since June 1 after trouble mongers spread false news in connection with the incident at Them ïew Mawlong on May 31 on social media.

The protest by mob took an ugly turn when agitators pelted stones at police at Motphran and Mawkhar area and demanded shifting of settlers from Them ïew Mawlong.
