SHILLONG, Dec 2: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday asserted that the Congress party is already internally fragmented and does not require external efforts to divide it, responding to allegations that the proposed united Northeast political front is backed by the BJP to weaken anti-BJP forces.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma dismissed the claims made by Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Vincent H. Pala, saying the Congress leadership itself is dealing with internal conflict.
“To be very blunt, nobody needs to work to divide them as they are already divided,” Sangma said.
He alleged that the Congress has deep-rooted differences and individual agendas within its ranks.
“The Congress is completely divided within. They may be sitting at the same table and talking, but internally they have their own plans. We are in touch with many of them, to be frank. They don’t need us to further divide them,” he stated.
Sangma termed Pala’s remarks “unfortunate” and said they reflect the party’s insecurity rather than political reality.
Emphasizing the role of unity in regional politics, the Chief Minister said the National People’s Party (NPP) is committed to fostering cooperation in the Northeast rather than engaging in confrontation.
“We are not here to fight or oppose anybody. We want to unify and send the message of unity for the region. The Northeast must work together in the larger interest of the region, and only by presenting a united front can we ensure our voices are heard and serve our people better,” he said.
Sangma reiterated that a stronger and united Northeast is essential to securing political space and advancing development priorities.
