Shillong, April 9: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has clarified concerns surrounding the proposed 5-star hotel project at Lumpongdeng near Umiam Lake in Ri-Bhoi district, following protests and a hunger strike by the Green-Tech Foundation outside the Secretariat.

Addressing the media, the Chief Minister acknowledged public apprehensions regarding the development on the island and sought to reassure citizens about the safeguards put in place.

He clarified that, as per the agreement between the government and the Tourism Department, no permanent construction will be allowed on the island. Sangma stated that concerns about the island being transformed into a concrete infrastructure zone are “completely unfounded.”

According to him, only temporary structures such as shamianas, bamboo installations, and small stalls will be permitted. These setups will be used for short-term events and dismantled within a few days, typically not exceeding a week to ten days.

The Chief Minister emphasised that such arrangements are similar to those used during festivals and public functions, ensuring minimal environmental impact and protection of the island’s flora and fauna.

He further noted that while certain permissions—such as those from the Forest Department—may allow regulated activities, the Tourism Department has taken a firm stance against any form of permanent infrastructure on the island.

Sangma urged the public not to be misled by misinformation, reiterating the government’s commitment to balancing tourism development with environmental conservation.
