North Shillong MLA wants relief centre in Tamil Nadu for stranded citizens

Shillong, May 6: North Shillong MLA, Adelbert Nongrum on Wednesday urged the state government to request the Tamil Nadu government to arrange a relief centre for citizens from the state who are stranded there due to the national lockdown.

In a letter to Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, Nongrum said, many people from Meghalaya are still stranded in and around CMC Hospital Vellore, since the time the lockdown was announced.

He said that they are facing difficulties be it way of living, lodging, fooding and shortage of money.

Nongrum urged the state government to communicate with the Tamil Nadu government and request it to arrange a relief centre at the expense of the Meghalaya government so that they have the courage to sacrifice in the fight against this deadliest virus.

“Being far from home, they should not feel that they are homeless especially in this hard and trying time. The same yardstick may also be applied to all those from our State who are facing the same difficulty in different states across the country,” he said.

Lauding the state government for its effort to bring back people stranded in other North Eastern states, the MLA suggested the government to have an isolation center which is being monitored by the government and not to allow people to self quarantine.

“We cannot take things for granted, for we may not know the outcome if they do self quarantine.

In the recent case of the demise of the first Covid-19 patient who was the respected figure from our State (Late) Dr. Sailo, whom to be blamed? So, let us not point fingers at each other, but let it be a lesson and continue to take preventive measures so that it won’t be too late,” Nongrum stated.
