Shillong, Mar 2: Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday thanked the people of Khasi and Jaiñtia region for reposing their faith in the National People’s Party (NPP) and partners of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government in the elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Khasi and Jaiñtia region for the support they have given and the faith they have reposed on the National People’s Party and also the constituents of the MDA,†Sangma said in a congratulatory message on Saturday evening.
The NPP emerged as the single largest party in the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) winning 12 of 29 seats, while the Congress came first, winning 10 seats in the KHADC.
The UDP got 10 seats, and the opposition Congress won only four seats, besides three Independents in the JHADC.
The strength of the MDA in the KHADC is 19 (NPP-7, UDP-6, HSPDP-2, and PDF-1) with the support of 3 Independents.
However in JHADC, the strength of the MDA is 22 (NPP-12 and UDP – 10). If the three Independents extend their support, the strength would go up to 25.
The Chief Minister assured the people of the Khasi and Jaiñtia and the whole state that the MDA government would continue to take the state forward.
“Now with this new mandate in the JHADC and KHADC, we will work unitedly to take the district councils, the government and the state forward,†Sangma said.
The opposition Congress emerged as the single largest party winning 10 out of 29 seats in KHADC, while the NPP bagged 12 seats, and its partner, the UDP won 10 seats in JHADC.
The Congress won 10 seats through Lamphrang Blah (Mawphlang–Diengiei), Grace Mary Kharpuri (Nongshken), Ronnie V. Lyngdoh (Mylliem), Fantin Lakadong (Laitumkhrah-Malki), Charles Marngar (Mawhati), Batskhem Ryntathiang (Mairang-Nongkhlaw), Carnes Sohshang (Mawkyrwat), and Bajop Pyngrope (Rambrai Jyrngam).
The NPP won seven seats from Mawshynrut: Gigur Myrthong, Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah: Pynshngaiñlang N. Syiem, Sohryngkham: Pynïaid Sing Syiem, Jirang: Victor Ranee, Laban-Mawprem: Mitchel Wankhar, Umroi: Rangkynsai Kharbuki, and Mawsynram: Alvin Khyriem Sawkmie,
Similarly, the United Democratic Party (UDP), came third winning six seats which include Jaïaw: Paul Lyngdoh, Shella: Teiñwell Dkhar, Sohra: Titosstar Well Chyne, Lyngkyrdem-Laitkroh: Ryngkatlang Lyndem, Pariong-Mawthadraishan: Jambor War, Langrin: Nasar Marweiñ.
The Hill State People’s Democratic Party won two seats, which include the senior most politician, Martle N. Mukhim who was re-elected as member of the KHADC from Mawkynrew constituency after 11 years. Mukhim, the former minister, lost the Assembly elections in 2008 as well as the elections to KHADC in 2009. Sherborlang Mawlong of the HSPDP also won from Nongspung – Sohïong constituency.
The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) which has four MLAs, won only one seat from Umsning through Macdalyn S. Mawlong.
Three Independents which include Nongkrem MLA, Lambor Malngiang who won from Nongkrem, Teiborlang Pathaw who won from Mawlai and sitting member, Latiplang Kharkongor who was re-elected for the fourth time from Nongthymmai constituency.
