Imphal, June 24: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP), which had withdrawn support to the BJP-led government in Manipur last week, has decided to continue to support the Nongthombam Biren Singh government.
Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh, who described the political crisis in Manipur as a “family matterâ€, expressed optimism that the crisis would be sorted out soon.
On Wednesday morning, Sangma along with his four party legislators from Manipur and Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma air dashed to New Delhi on a special plane for a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president, J.P.Nadda.
“A positive meeting took place between @amitshah and @himantabiswa and the NPP delegation and we have decided to continue to work together in the interest of people of Manipur,†Sangma, the NPP national president tweeted.
Sarma, the BJP’s key troubleshooter in the northeast also took to Twitter and shared photos from the meeting between the NPP delegation led Sangma and Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Yumman Joy Kumar Singh with BJP president J.P.Nadda.
“A NPP delegation led by @SangmaConrad and Dy Chief Minister of Manipur Sri Y Joy Kumar Singh met Honble Home minister Sri @AmitShah ji today in New Delhi. Both @BJP4India and NPP will continue to work together for the development of Manipur,†Sarma tweeted.
Sources said that during the meeting, the four NPP legislators – Y Joykumar, L Jayantakumar, Letpao Haokip and N Kayisii – told the BJP central leadership that they would rejoin the coalition government if Biren is replaced.
However, the BJP leadership had assured the NPP delegation that the leadership issue would be sorted out internally by the saffron party.
Chief Minister Biren, who appears to be unperturbed with NPP’s demand and said, “Whatever is happening in Manipur is a family problem and the party leaders will find out an amicable solution. It was not unusual for two national parties like BJP and NPP to sort out issues in Delhi.â€
BJP’s national secretary Ram Madhav, who is camping in Imphal too exuded confidence that the BJP-NPP alliance government would complete its term in March 2022, when the next State polls are scheduled.
We shall complete the full five-year term,†he said, without elaborating if there will be a change of guard.
The BJP-led government was reduced to a minority after nine legislators — the four of NPP, the three of the BJP, one of the Trinamool Congress and an Independent — withdrew support on June 17. Three BJP legislators resigned over differences with the Chief Minister Biren.
