NPP’s stand to oppose CAB is resolution of entire North East: Conrad K Sangma

New Delhi Nov 30: Thanking the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah and the Central government for inviting political parties and different organizations of the Northeast to discuss on the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), the National People’s Party (NPP) said that it has unanimously resolved to oppose the CAB, while maintaining that this is not just the resolution of the NPP alone but the people of entire North East and all State governments of Northeast and all organizations in the region.

“We are thankful to the Home Minister and the Government of India for inviting political parties and different organizations of the Northeast to discuss the matter and for taking certain steps and measures to safeguard the interest of the people of region. However, we strongly feel that more steps and measures will be required to protect the rights of the indigenous people of the region,” NPP national president, Conrad K Sangma said while speaking at the National Executive Committee meeting of the party.

The National Executive Committee meeting chaired by Conrad, was held at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi on Saturday.

The meeting was attended by NPP leaders from different States, including Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya Prestone Tynsong, Home Minister James K. Sangma, former Chief Minister, DD Lapang and a host of other leaders of the party.

The party has adopted a resolution to continue to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 and has also discussed measures to strengthen the party ahead of the Council elections in the State of Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura.

“The party has unanimously resolved to oppose CAB and this is not just the resolution of the NPP, but people of the entire Northeast and all State governments of the Northeast and all organizations,” Conrad, who is the Chief Minister of Meghalaya said.

Leaders from different States of the Northeast including Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Assam expressed their opposition against the CAB during the meeting, and said that imposition of CAB in the Northeast will be against the aspirations of the people and will create problems and tensions in the region.

The party remained firm on its stand against CAB and has adopted a resolution during the meeting to oppose the CAB in its present form.

The National Executive meeting also discussed measures to intensify enrolment drive in different States of the country, reach out to the youth, propagate and motivate the people to be part of the people’s movement of NPP. The other issues discussed in the meeting include publication of a quarterly newsletter reform and to further intensify its communication network to promote the ideology and principles of the party.

The NPP leader had also led a delegation of various political parties and met Union Home Minister, Amit Shah on the CAB issue.

Various ministers of the Meghalaya government accompanied the Meghalaya Chief Minister.
