Shillong, Apr 23: The proposed setting up of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) bottling plant in the state is likely to start soon.
Informing this at a press conference here on Monday, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) officials said that a meeting with the Dorbar Shnong of Umroi in Ri Bhoi district will be held on Tuesday to discuss the issue.
“The dorbar of Umroi Pyllun assured to issue the no objection certificate (NOC) if they are satisfied with the conditions,†distributor, R.L. Blah told reporters. He expressed optimism that the NOC would be issued for the setting up of the project.
Meghalaya is the only state in the region which has no bottling plant despite the state facing shortage of LPG due to increase in the number of consumers.
It may be mentioned that a 50 acres land at Umroi-Umjatah has been identified by the IOC since 1996 for setting up of the bottling plant. However, the project could not take off due to objection from the village authority.
Last year, the Centre has announced a sanction of Rs 75 crore for setting up a Liquefied Petroleum Gas bottling plant in Meghalaya to increase the LPG penetration especially in rural areas of the state.
To push the project forward, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was inked between the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the state government in the presence of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and then chief minister, Mukul Sangma in December last year.
