Shillong, Jul 6: Meghalaya Health Minister, A.L.Hek on Monday said that the outbreak of diarrhea at Mustoh village under East Khasi Hills district could be due to water.
“We suspect the cause of the outbreak may be due to water since the people in the area have confirmed that they did not have anything unusual to eat,” Hek said.
He said the stools and water samples have been sent for testing at Pasteur Institute Laboratory to ascertain the cause of the infection.
“The test results are expected to come out in a day or two,” the Minister said.
More than 50 people, mostly children of Mustoh village and other adjoining areas under Sohra civil sub-division, were infected with the disease.
On Sunday, the government sounded a diarrhea alert after an unusual number of diarrhea cases were reported in the area.
Medical Officer of Laitkynsew primary health centre (PHC), Dr. Amazinglin Kharjana, confirmed that 11 patients who admitted there, showed symptoms of diarrhea.
She said 19 patients were admitted in Sohra Community Health Centre while five in Ichamati PHC.
