“Overburden” PDF leader quits as president, Minister takes charge as acting president

Shillong Nov 12: People’s Democratic Front (PDF) president, Ivanlumlang Marbañiang has resigned and handed over the post to Minister in-charge Agriculture and Sports, Banteidor Lyngdoh.

While Lyngdoh, who was the PDF working president, took over as acting president of the PDF till next year, Marbañiang will be the chairman of the party.

The PDF has four MLAs in which two of them are ministers. The party also has one member of district council.

The general council of the PDF will be held next year to elect a new president and other office bearers of the Central Executive Committee (CEC).

The term of the PDF president is three years, but Marbañiang vacated the post one year before the expiry of the term.

Lyngdoh was chosen as acting President of the PDF by members of the CEC on Monday night following the sudden decision of Marbañiang to vacate the post.

Marbañiang told reporters on Tuesday evening that there was no reason that made him quit as President but it was his feeling that he should handover the responsibility to other leaders to further strengthen the party.

“As chairman of the party, we will work as a team and work together for the growth of the party,” Marbañiang said.

However Urban Affairs minister, Hamletson Dohling and Lyngdoh said that Marbañiang decided to handover the president’s post as he was overburden with other responsibilities.

They however did not reveal what are those responsibilities that overburden Marbañiang.

Marbañiang said that after the CEC accepted his decision to vacate the post of President, the house unanimously proposed and elected Lyngdoh as acting president.

Lyngdoh said that he was ready to take over as acting president and shoulder the responsibility by working together with all party leaders and members to strengthen the party.

When asked about the difference between the post of president and chairman, PDF general secretary, Auspicious Lyngdoh Mawphlang said that executive decision is taken by the president of the party even though the chairman and president shares equal rank
