Pala says BJP and allies fail to resolve ban on coal mining

Shillong Mar 19: Congress MP from Shillong Parliamentary constituency, Vincent H Pala alleged that the BJP and its allies have failed to resolve the issue related to the ban on coal mining by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in the state.

Speaking to media persons here on Monday, Pala said, “The BJP in its manifesto had promised if it comes to power in Meghalaya or its allies will lift the ban but till now, nothing has been done.”

“I have pursued the matter with the Union Home Ministry and different ministries. Now the file is lying with the coal ministry and BJP minister in-charge of coal did not allow it,” he said.

According to him, the counsel for the Central government had informed the Supreme Court that the home minister has no objection but permission is yet to get from the coal ministry.

“The chief minister (Conrad K Sangma) is aware of this and we have had a series of meetings with officers from different departments. They said they will do it, but nothing has been done. They did not do what they say in the manifesto,” he said while urging the people not to believe in the BJP manifesto.

Pala also said that the Congress national president Rahul Gandhi during his campaign at Jowai for the Assembly elections, 2018, had assured that if Congress comes back to power, it will advise the President of India to issue a presidential notification under Para 12 (a)(b) of the Sixth Schedule.
