Shillong, March 3: Concern over the problem of water crisis in the constituency. The Committee on Subordinate Legislation chaired by South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai on Thursday issued a ten-day deadline to the Public Health Engineering (PHE) and Shillong Cantonment Board to sort out the water scarcity problem in cantonment areas including Jhalupara. The Committee have summoned the senior officials of the PHE and Shillong Cantonment Board also question them over the problem of water crisis in the constituency and cantonment areas. Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Shullai said that if the problem of water scarcity is not resolved by the Shillong Cantonment Board within 10 days, the panel would be required to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the court since residents in the cantonment pay tax for water. The Shillong Cantonment Board have to furnish reports along with necessary documents before the committee within 10 days, he said. The decision to summon the officials of the Shillong Cantonment Board and PHE department was taken at a public meeting held inJhalupara recently where issues pertaining to water scarcity in the area were discussed. Shullai said.
