Nongpoh, Oct 28: Despite continuous efforts by the police and various enforcement teams to combat illegal activities and anti-social behavior, certain offenders continue to operate without fear — even along main roads where police have intensified vehicle checking drives.
Late last night, police from the Nongpoh Police Station in Ri Bhoi District seized a vehicle carrying as many as 28 bags of ganja near the police station itself.
During the official examination of the seized contraband, conducted in the presence of independent witnesses, it was found that the ganja was of a highly potent variety, commonly referred to in local markets as “Number 1.”
According to police reports, the Maruti Espresso car bearing registration number AS 01 EG 7234 was travelling from Umsning towards Byrnihat when it was intercepted. However, around midnight, the occupants of the vehicle reportedly fled the scene, abandoning the car right in front of the Nongpoh Police Station.
By the following morning, when the police conducted the inspection and verification process, none of the individuals involved or any members of the public came forward, reportedly out of fear of legal action following the major drug seizure.
Police have launched an investigation to trace those responsible for transporting the illegal substance.
