Shillong, Feb 4, 2026: Babu Kular Khongjrem, a teacher at KJP School, Shillong, on Tuesday expressed concern over what he described as the Meghalaya Government’s failure to properly implement the National Education Policy (NEP) in the state.
Speaking to reporters, Khongjrem said the government has not begun implementing the NEP at the foundational levels of education, instead focusing on colleges and universities. He maintained that the policy is intended to be rolled out in a phased manner, beginning with nursery and primary education.
“The NEP is designed to be implemented from the ground up. However, the government is skipping the foundational levels and moving directly to higher education, which defeats the purpose of the policy,” he said.
Khongjrem also criticised the approach adopted in designing and implementing school syllabi, stating that many students find the current syllabus difficult to comprehend due to its complexity and lack of a clear, structured methodology.
“Without a strong foundation, students will struggle to cope with their studies at higher levels,” he warned.
He urged the state government to clearly define the methodologies and frameworks used in syllabus formulation and to ensure that NEP implementation adheres to its core principles. According to him, successful implementation requires proper guidance, adequate teacher training, and a student-centric approach from the earliest stages of schooling.
Khongjrem emphasised that the NEP must be implemented systematically, starting from nursery and primary schools before extending to colleges and universities, to ensure meaningful learning outcomes. He cautioned that failure to do so could lead to confusion in schools and adversely affect students’ academic development.
