Purno Sangma's stance on dividing northeast sparks controversy

Shillong, Mar 31: Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has reignited controversy with his recent comments on Late Purno A Sangma’s stance on dividing the Northeast into smaller states along ethnic lines.

Singh’s remarks have sparked tensions with Meghalaya, particularly with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Purno’s son.

Singh claimed that Sangma’s idea poses a threat to national unity and is being echoed in current attempts to destabilize Manipur.

He emphasized Manipur’s unique situation, with multiple indigenous communities requiring protection through measures like the Inner Line Permit (ILP).

Singh cited a complex mix of challenges, including the drug menace, illegal immigration, and the destruction of forests.

He highlighted Manipur’s progress in border fencing and regulating the Free Movement Regime (FMR).

Singh questioned Sangma’s awareness of the rising number of unrecognized villages within Manipur’s borders.

Meanwhile, Sangma termed Singh’s comments “unfortunate” and emphasized his father’s contributions to the Northeast’s development. He called for collaborative efforts to restore peace and harmony in Manipur, rather than engaging in political posturing.

The controversy comes amid the National People’s Party’s (NPP) withdrawal of support to the Biren Singh-led BJP government in Manipur in November 2024.

The NPP had seven MLAs in the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly before the withdrawal.
