Shillong, Jan 2: The Chairman of the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong, Pynthorumkhrah Area, Bah Michael Hek, has strongly condemned the Shillong Golf Club for fencing off the entire Golf Links area, terming the move illegal, arbitrary and unacceptable.

Speaking to the media, Bah Hek expressed serious concern over what he described as a unilateral attempt by the Shillong Golf Club to assert ownership over land traditionally used by the public. He alleged that the erection of fencing and recent cleaning activities were aimed at projecting control over the area without lawful authority.

Questioning the legal basis of the Club’s claim, Bah Hek said any ownership or custodial rights over the land must be supported by clear legal documentation and formal government authorisation, none of which, he claimed, have been made public so far.

“Fencing off public land without consultation with local shnong authorities or residents is a direct violation of community rights,” he stated.

He further pointed out that the Golf Links area has historically been used by local residents and the general public for movement, recreation and community activities. Any attempt to restrict public access, he warned, could lead to resentment, tension and possible unrest.

The Rangbah Shnong leader urged the Meghalaya Government and district administration to intervene immediately, dismantle the fencing and ensure that no institution encroaches upon land meant for public use.

He also cautioned that if the matter is not resolved through dialogue and lawful means, the shnong authorities would be compelled to collectively take up the issue to safeguard community land and protect public interest.
