Shillong, August 15: Governor of Meghalaya, C. H. Vijayashankar, hosted the state’s traditional “At Home” reception at the historic Raj Bhavan to celebrate India’s 79th Independence Day.
The event was attended by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, legislators, senior officials, defence personnel, and eminent citizens from various fields. The Raj Bhavan lawns, illuminated in the colours of the Tricolour, provided a fitting backdrop for an evening of unity, culture, and recognition of excellence.
A cultural programme curated by the Department of Arts & Culture with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) featured diverse performances, including a soulful “Vande Mataram” by KHMIH Society, the Meghalaya State Song screening, puppetry by Padmashree Bhimmavaa Doddabalappa Shille Kyathara, Jogathri Nritya by Padmashree Dr. B. Manjamma Jogathi, “Oneness of Us” dance presentation, a Khasi-Sitar Jugalbandi, and “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon” by the Assam Rifles Jazz Band.
On the occasion, the Governor released the book From Residency to Raj Bhavan, chronicling the residence’s historical journey.

Distinguished personalities were felicitated, including para-athlete Iarapborlang Chyne, Everest climber Rifiness Warjri, puppeteer Padmashree Bhimmavaa Doddabalappa Shille Kyathara, folk artist Padmashree Dr. B. Manjamma Jogathi, India’s Best Dancer (Season 4) winner Steve Jyrwa, and young painter Baiahunlang Nongrum from SOS Children’s Village.
The Crystal Grace Nongkynrih Cash Awards were presented to Dr. Mebanlamphang Lyngdoh (Khasi traditional music scholar), Ricky Paul Marwein (VFX artist), Rangkitbok C. Dohkrut (poet and environmentalist), Ram Kynjin (sculptor), and Kyrmenlang Uriah (journalist and social activist).
The “At Home” reception continues to be a hallmark of Meghalaya’s Independence Day celebrations, reflecting national pride, cultural diversity, and the spirit of honouring excellence.
