Shillong, Sept 13, 2025:
The people of Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency had reason to rejoice as a decades-old dream of better road connectivity finally moved towards reality. After more than 35 years of waiting, the Rambrai–Mawlansgu road project was officially inaugurated, marking a turning point for the region’s long struggle for development.
At a massive public gathering attended by hundreds of villagers from nearly 300 villages, Deputy Chief Minister and PWD (Roads) Minister Bah Prestone Tynsong laid the foundation stone and inaugurated the project. The event also saw the presence of MLA Remington Gabil Momin, MDC Lurshai Kharbani, and senior PWD officials, including Bah S. Massar, Superintendent Engineer, Western Circle, and Bah D. Rani, Executive Engineer, Nongstoin Division.
The ₹14.77 crore project, awarded to M/S Pathaw Construction JV Shri Phorket Mawlong, will upgrade a 6.158 km MBT stretch from Rambrai–Mawlansgu via Mawthungmarwei to Photumbah. The work includes road improvement, contingencies, and a two-year maintenance period.
Once completed, the road will directly benefit the villages of Mawthungmarwei, Mawkohiew, Mawmluh, and Photumbah. Currently, residents must travel 41 km via Nongstoin, but the new alignment—linked with PMGSY-III roads—will cut the distance to just 11.2 km, saving time, reducing transport costs, and improving access to healthcare, education, and local markets.
Speaking at the ceremony, Tynsong stressed the government’s focus on rural connectivity, stating:
“Without roads, no development can reach the people.”
The project will open up new opportunities for farmers and traders and reduce logistical challenges.
He urged villagers to cooperate with the contractor and take ownership in maintaining the road after completion.
Tynsong also praised MLA Momin and MDC Kharbani for their relentless efforts in pursuing the project and assured that Rambrai would remain a priority in the next phases of road development. He revealed that new PWD proposals for road infrastructure in West Khasi Hills are already in the pipeline.
The programme ended with loud cheers and applause from the crowd, with villagers hailing the project as a “milestone in Rambrai’s development journey.”
