Shillong, June 21: Senior Congress MLA from Ranikor constituency, Martin M. Danggo has resigned late on Thursday night after his plan got confused during the day.
Earlier, Danggo was to submit his resignation letter to Assembly Deputy Speaker, Timothy D. Shira at 5 pm at the Assembly Secretariat (Administrative Block) in Khyndai Lad here.
However the Deputy Speaker said that Danggo had put on hold his plan to resgin as MLA, but he did not reveal the reasons.
However late at night, Home Minister, James K. Sangma claimed that Danggo has resigned as member of the Assembly, and he would join the National People’s Party (NPP).
James said that he had spoken to the Deputy Speaker who confirmed to him that Danggo has officially submitted his resignation letter.
“His (Danggo’s) resignation letter was also accepted,†James claimed.
However Danggo and the Deputy Speaker could not be contacted.
During a public meeting at Ranikor on June 12, Danggo had announced that he would resign from the Congress and as MLA of Ranikor once the Ranikor Civil Sub-Division is created by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
The opposition Congress now has 20 MLAs in the 60-member Assembly, and the ruling NPP also has 20 MLAs.
Danggo would seek re-election when a bye election to the Ranikor Assembly seat is held.
