Shillong, Dec 17: Nagaland Governor R.N. Ravi was sworn in as the Governor of Meghalaya on Tuesday.

Soon after oath, Ravi returned to Nagaland

Meghalaya High Court Chief Justice Mohammad Rafiq administered the oath of office and secrecy to Ravi at the Raj Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and other ministers, senior government officials and defence officials.

After Ravi arrived at the Raj Bhavan, the Chief Minister held a meeting with him.

It was not known what the agenda of the meeting was.

However, it is believed that Conrad has briefed the Governor about the prevailing situation following the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 becoming an act, and the delay of the Governor, Tathagata Roy to give his assent to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019.

Ravi avoided speaking to journalists and soon after he took charge, he drove back to the Advanced Landing Ground of the Indian Air Force and boarded the helicopter to Nagaland.

Ravi was given the additional charge after Tathagata Roy suddenly took leave.

The sudden leave taken by Roy came after facing criticisms from various quarters following his controversial tweet asking those who do not want “divisive democracy to go to North Korea” in the wake of the ongoing protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.

There has also been a tussle between the Governor Roy and the BJP-backed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government over his refusal to give his assent to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019.

The Ordinance seeks registration of all non-residents of Meghalaya, including tourists who visit the state.
