Shillong, Dec 1: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Vincent H. Pala on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engineering the move to form a proposed Regional Front in the Northeast, alleging that the initiative is aimed at dividing anti-BJP political forces across the region.
Speaking to media persons, Pala said that the attempt to bring parties such as the National People’s Party (NPP), TIPRA Motha and others under one umbrella is not a genuine political realignment but a calculated strategy of the BJP and its ideological parent organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
“This is a plan of the RSS and the BJP… they want to make another basket where anti-BJP elements will be put, so that they don’t go to Congress or other parties,” Pala remarked.
He questioned the credibility of the proposed alliance, alleging that several leaders involved either have a history with the BJP or maintain close ties with its leadership.
“They are all friends of the BJP only. After the elections, they will go and work with the BJP only. It is a hundred percent a plan of the BJP,” he alleged.
Pala urged the people of the Northeast to remain cautious, stressing that the Regional Front is merely a tactical extension of the BJP intended to consolidate power rather than represent regional aspirations.
“People should be much smarter than what they plan,” he said, asserting that the proposed front offers no real ideological distinction from the BJP.
The Congress has been critical of emerging political alliances in the region, warning that fragmentation of opposition votes will ultimately strengthen the BJP’s influence ahead of upcoming electoral battles.
Meanwhile, discussions on the formation of the Regional Front continue, though no formal announcement has yet been made. Observers say the development could significantly impact political equations in the Northeast in the months leading up to key elections.
