Shillong Apr 15: Re-polling at Konarchar polling station under Selsella Assembly constituency for both the Tura Lok Sabha poll and Selsella Assembly bye election recorded a voters’ turnout of around 93 percent.

The Konarchar polling station has a total of 712 voters and the turnout for the Lok Sabha poll was 93.40 per cent, and 93.12 per cent for the bye election.

Chief Electoral Officer, Frederick Roy Kharkongor said that there was a difference in figures of the voters’ turnout as there were some polling officials who cast their vote for the Lok Sabha poll at the polling station through election duty certificate (EDC).

Selsella Assembly seat went to bye-election together with the Lok Sabha poll to Tura Parliamentary constituency on April 11.

However the re-poll was necessitated due to crisscrossing of EVMs during the polling held on April 11. The problem occurred due to a mix-up of EVMs as it was that there was wrong connection of the voting machines by a presiding officer of the particular polling booth.

Two EVMs were used, one for Assembly bypoll, and another for Lok Sabha poll at Konarchar polling station as well as in other polling stations under Selsella Assembly constituency.

The bye election to Selsella Assembly constituency has to be conducted to fill up the vacant seat after the death of sitting MLA, Clement Marak on October 8 last year.

Four candidates are in the fray in the bye election to Selsella Assembly constituency. The candidates include, Ferlin C.A. Sangma of the ruling NPP, June Eliana R. Marak of the Congress, Sayeedullah Nongrum of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and Adorsho Sangma of the BJP.
