‘Resolution to Assam-Meghalaya border should be acceptable to people across community and party lines’

Mukul Sangma: How will you ensure independent enquiry if police officers still in office

Shillong, Mar 6: Meghalaya opposition leader, Dr. Mukul Sangma has said that any decision pertaining to resolution to areas of differences between Meghalaya and Assam must be something which is acceptable to all people across community and party lines.

Dr. Sangma also said that the issue should not be politicised.

”There should be hardly any place for politicisation of this issue once it is decided upon,” the leader of opposition added.

According to him, taking everybody on board at the time of engagement and discussion is very crucial.

Stating that there is a need to do some tight rope walking to resolve the decades long border dispute with Assam, Dr. Sangma said that when elections are near one cannot rule desperados trying to politicise this issue and whip up sentiments.

The opposition leader said that any government of the day will be hesitant to take a bold decision and this is where a strong political will is required, to arrive at a solution.

“Any contentious issues can be somehow misinterpreted and misused by anybody in order to take political mileage,” he said.

According to him, it is for this reason discussions have slowed down and there is complete dormancy of discussion.

“You revive and you restore the discussion and then a new incumbent government comes and new people which lead the government,” Dr. Sangma said.

According to the opposition leader, one needs an in-depth understanding about the actual genesis and core issues relating to the areas of difference.

“…then only we would be able to arrive at mutually acceptable solutions by the people from both sides so that no political party can create controversy out of it,” Dr. Sangma added.
