Shillong, April 10: Chairman of the Assembly Estimates Committee Mayralborn Syiem on Friday expressed optimism that the ongoing upgradation of schools under Mission Education will significantly improve learning facilities, particularly for students in rural Meghalaya.
Speaking to reporters after chairing a review meeting with officials from the Education Department and other departments, Syiem said the committee held detailed discussions on infrastructure development across educational institutions.
“We have discussed thoroughly the implementation of construction works across various model colleges and other institutions,” he said.
Highlighting the progress under Mission Education, Syiem noted that the initiative includes the upgradation of hundreds of lower primary schools, along with improvements in upper primary and secondary government schools.
“The positive inputs we are receiving show that Mission Education is a strong initiative. It ensures that government schools—especially those serving children from economically weaker families—are upgraded to provide better educational opportunities,” he said.
He added that the improvements are aimed at making schools more child-friendly and eco-friendly, creating a conducive learning environment at the grassroots level.
“While the government cannot achieve everything at once, a step-by-step approach is being followed. I am optimistic that over time, we will see significant improvements in infrastructure, particularly in villages, with better classrooms and an eco-friendly environment for children,” Syiem stated.
The committee also reviewed projects under the Public Works Department (PWD) and Public Health Engineering (PHE), directing officials to expedite implementation.
“We have instructed the departments to speed up execution so that projects are completed within the stipulated timeframe,” he added.
