Shillong, Nov 23: Seng Khasi Kmie, Mawkhar, held a special felicitation ceremony on Saturday to mark the conclusion of the 126th Seng Kut Snem anniversary, honouring elders who have made significant contributions to safeguarding the indigenous faith and Khasi cultural identity.
Among the awardees, renowned Khasi author and cultural scholar Bah Snipton Kharakor received the highest recognition. Widely respected for his extensive writings on Khasi traditions, indigenous beliefs, and social life, Bah Snipton has played an instrumental role in guiding younger generations toward a deeper understanding of Khasi heritage. His works are widely referenced in schools, cultural institutions, and community organisations. He is also an active leader within Seng Khasi and a strong advocate for promoting Khasi values and language.
Bah Snipton attended the ceremony in person, accompanied by his children, to receive the honour.
Several other elders were also felicitated for their contributions in diverse fields including culture, community leadership, and traditional knowledge. Honours for those who had passed away were received by their family members.
The event saw the presence of several dignitaries, including Health Minister Wailad Miki Shylla, Justice Hamarsing Thangkhiew of the Meghalaya High Court, and Païem Dr. Balajied Sing Syiem, Chief of Hima Khyrrim. Leaders from Seng Kmie, Seng Samla, Seng Kynthei, Seng Kur, and various village units were also in attendance.
Seng Khasi leaders described the honoured elders as “distinct footprints” whose lifelong dedication has played a crucial role in preserving the indigenous faith and strengthening the foundations of Khasi identity. They added that the contributions of these elders form a lasting legacy for future generations.
