Shillong, June 13: Congress MLA from Mawsynram, Himalaya M Shangpliang on Wednesday asked the MDA-led government to also consider Mawsynram as a Civil Sub Division, a day after Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma assured to upgrade the Ranikor Administrative Unit into a Civil Sub Division.
The Chief Minister assured to upgrade Ranikor administrative unit into a full-fledged civil sub-division with an aim to take administration closer to the people at a public meeting held at Ranikor on Tuesday.
Shangpliang said that the demand of the people to make Mawsynram a Civil Sub Division has been pending for more than 15 years, since the tenure of two former chief ministers, DD Lapang and Salseng C Marak.
According to the MLA, several memorandums and letters submitted on this regard are still lying pending with the state government till date.
“If the government is considering upgrading Ranikor into a civil sub-division then I would also like to request the government under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma to also give a civil sub-division for Mawsynram,†he said.
On the other hand, the Mawsynram MLA said that though he is not against the move of the government to upgrade Ranikor administrative unit into a civil sub-division but the fact is that Mawsynram has the merit to be granted a civil sub-division.
“I want the State government to examine the demand based on merit and I don’t see any reason why the government should not consider it,†he said while making it clear there is no politics involved but it is for the benefit and development of Mawsynram and its people.
Recalling that he had also raised the matter in the floor of the Assembly earlier this year, Shangpliang also reminded that the chief minister had assured that the proposal would be examined by the government.
