Shillong, Apr 4: Cabinet Minister and South Shillong legislator Sanbor Shullai on Saturday highlighted the strategic importance of the Shillong–Dawki road project, stating that it has the potential to become a key component of the pan-Asia integrated intermodal transport system.
“The project road is part of the Asian Highway (AH) network and has the potential to become an important building block for a pan-Asia integrated intermodal transport system,” Shullai said while addressing the inauguration of a link road.
He added that upon completion, the project would significantly enhance connectivity with Bangladesh, thereby contributing to the growth of international trade.
The project is also expected to provide a major boost to tourism by improving access to prominent destinations such as Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Dawki, Cherrapunji, and Mawlynnong, often referred to as Asia’s cleanest village.
“It will improve access to tourist destinations, promoting tourism in the region,” Shullai said.
The 71-km Shillong–Dawki corridor is being developed as a two-lane road with paved shoulders, with provisions for four-laning in select stretches. The total project cost is estimated at ₹2,171 crore, including land acquisition and associated expenses.
The project has been divided into five packages, of which four were sanctioned in 2020. However, implementation faced delays due to land acquisition challenges and issues related to public utilities.
“With constant effort, the hindrances were resolved, and the four projects were restarted between October 2022 and May 2023,” Shullai added.
