Shillong, July 2: Health minister AL Hek informed that Kolkata based firm, KPC group has agreed to the new proposal of the state government to construct the Shillong Medical College at Umsawli near Mawdiangdiang.

“We will have a meeting with the KPC group on July 15 and finalize the decision,” Hek told reporters here on Tuesday.

The foundation stone for the construction of the medical college was earlier laid at the premises of the Reid Chest TB hospital in the city. It was also decided to shift the TB hospital to its new building at Umsawli to pave way for the project.

In 2012, the state government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the KPC group for setting up a 500-bedded hospital-cum-medical college in Shillong.

Hek informed that the land at Umsawli is only 17 acres adding “Since 20 acres of land is required for setting up of the college as per MCI norms, we have also decided to request the urban affairs department to consider giving another 5 acres of land for this purpose.”

He said that the company will also utilize the building already constructed (earlier for TB hospital for Rs 20 crore) at Umsawli.
