Shillong, Apr 24: Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) is in the process of shifting its temporary office from the board’s staff quarters in order to accommodate the employees who are residing at Them ïew Mawlong.
“We are on the job to shift the SMB office so that we can provide accommodation to the employees at the earliest,†Tynsong, who is heading the high level committee to find a feasible solution for relocating the sweeper’s lane, said.
Almost 30 out of 70 units have been used as temporary office of the board for the past few years since the permanent office building located at Jail Road area is yet to be completed.
Earlier, the high level committee has identified a total of 184 employees and their families as legal settlers of the area. Of this, 128 are employees of the Shillong Municipal Board.
The deputy chief minister said the next sitting of the high level committee will only be convened after order is given by the Meghalaya High Court, which at present is hearing the matter related to the issue.
In the meantime, Tynsong informed that he would soon hold a meeting with the Syiem of Hima Mylliem to discuss the matter.
The high level committee was constituted by the government last year following the violent protest which erupted at Motphran and Mawkhar area and lasted for five days over the issue related to the demand to shift settlers from Them ïew Mawlong.
