SHILLONG, DEC 5: Minister incharge of Legal Metrology Sanbor Shullai has directed the department to submit a comprehensive status report within 60 days, warning that continued inaction will not be tolerated.
Following a review meeting with officers on Friday, Shullai expressed frustration over the department’s performance, noting that only 13 inspectors are currently deployed across Meghalaya, which he described as “grossly inadequate.”
“We have discussed enhancing the staff structure, and the chief controller and director have been asked to examine and place it for approval,” he said.
The minister said he was disappointed that very few cases have been detected or penalized since the establishment of the state in 1972. He instructed inspectors to intensify checks at petrol pumps, weighbridges and other commercial units, and submit findings within the given timeframe.
“They should be sincere and conduct checking at their level with due consultation with the controller and the director,” Shullai stated.
Calling for public participation, he urged citizens to report irregularities and assured swift action.
“We will create awareness that this department is working for them. People should not hesitate to file complaints at the nearest police station or even directly to me. Action will be taken as per law,” he said.
The department has faced criticism for failing to safeguard consumers, particularly those from low-income groups. Shullai stressed that protecting public interest remains its primary responsibility.
