Shillong, July 16: In strict adherence to the Hon’ble High Court of Meghalaya’s directive in IPL No. 7 of 2024 (Phuyosa Yobin vs State of Meghalaya & Anr), and as per Public Notice No. EJHD/Judl.48/Pt.III/2025/119 dated 18th June 2025, as well as Office Order No. EJHD/Judl.48/Pt.III/2025/173 dated 4th July 2025, a joint inspection was conducted on 8th July 2025 in East Jaintia Hills District.
The team—comprising Executive Magistrates of East Jaintia Hills, police personnel, and officials from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, Shillong—carried out surprise raids in Khliehriat Market, Sookilo Market, and the Umpleng Cement Market area.
During the inspection, approximately 1,705.451 kilograms of banned single-use plastic items (below 120 microns) were seized. Several shopkeepers were fined on the spot, while repeat violators were served warning notices.
The operation marks a significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to curb plastic pollution and encourage environmentally sustainable practices. Authorities have once again appealed to the public and businesses to comply strictly with the ban on single-use plastics.
More such enforcement drives are expected in the coming weeks.
