Nongpoh, January 19: The Sohjer Festival, a significant traditional and cultural celebration of the Khasi community, was observed with great fervour and traditional splendour in Raid Marwet of Ri Bhoi district on Monday. The festival, held under the jurisdiction of the Hima Mylliem, reflects the community’s deep respect for customary laws, ancestral traditions, and social unity.
The celebrations concluded on a vibrant and festive note with the participation of traditional leaders from various Raids. Among those present were the Syiem of Raid Marwet, Paiem Ken Syiem; Myntri of Hima Mylliem, Basan Nongumlong; and the Syiem of Raid Marngar, Paiem Richard Syiem, along with other dignitaries and thousands of residents from the Raid.

The Sohjer Festival was organised at 9 Mer, Baridua, a village located along the Assam–Meghalaya border.
The event witnessed a large turnout of people dressed in traditional attire, showcasing the living heritage of the region. Despite its proximity to neighbouring states, the area continues to preserve and practise its indigenous customs and traditions, reflecting the resilience of Khasi cultural identity.

Speaking on the occasion, traditional leaders, including Basan Nongumlong, said the Sohjer Festival is observed annually to commemorate age-old rituals and honour the forefathers who laid the foundation for preserving these traditions across generations. He explained that the festival comprises different ceremonial stages, including an initial phase of internal rituals conducted earlier, followed by the present public gathering of the Raid Marwet community.
The Sohjer Festival continues to serve as a platform for reinforcing cultural values, communal harmony, and inter-generational transmission of Khasi traditions.
