Shillong, Dec 7: The annual Sohphlang Market Festival, organised by the Mawkynrew Sohphlang Indigenous Eco Cultural Society, was held on December 5 and 6 at Jongksha–Lad Kharang, drawing thousands of visitors who came to experience the cultural richness and traditional flavours of the Mawkynrew region.
The two-day event showcased a wide array of cultural performances, including skits and traditional musical presentations by local groups. The stage came alive with performances by Nongtem Ieid Lariti of Mawjatap, the Syntung musical troupe, Lanora Band, Na U Bnai, and Trinity Voices, each highlighting the depth and uniqueness of indigenous music and talent.
A key highlight of the festival was the Farmers Dress Show, which provided young participants with an opportunity to showcase the traditional attire worn by farmers across the region.
Miss Sohphlang & Farmers Dress Show 2025 – Winners Announced

Nine contestants participated in this year’s Miss Sohphlang and Farmers Dress Show 2025. The winners were:
Jessica Nongpluh – Second Runner-up, ₹10,000
Fatima Mukhim – First Runner-up, ₹15,000
Rosina Mylliem – Winner of Miss Farmers Show 2025, ₹20,000 + certificate
Awards were presented by Bah Olet Kharsohnoh, Sordar of Jongksha village, and Bah Wainbha Nongrum, leader of the Sur U Nongkyndong organisation.
The festival saw enthusiastic participation from men, women, youth, and children, making it a memorable community celebration.

A Festival Growing in Strength
What began as a small local initiative has now transformed into a major cultural attraction, drawing visitors not only from Meghalaya but also from neighbouring states. The festival has become a significant economic platform for farmers, who were able to sell their produce directly to visitors without paying any fees to the Society, offering crucial financial support to the farming community.
Addressing the gathering, Bah Carmel Lyngdoh, Adviser of the Society, expressed gratitude to the government for its sustained support and assured continued growth and improvement of the festival.
Bah Wainbha Nongrum praised the organisers for bringing the event to the Mawkynrew Block and for promoting the cultural wealth and hard work of local farmers.
The Sohphlang Festival stands today as a vibrant celebration of tradition, community, and the enduring spirit of the farmers of Mawkynrew.
