Shillong, Oct 19: One Sunny Ghosh (24) was arrested for assaulting a special operation team (SOT) personnel of the state police who was on duty during the immersion ceremony of goddess Durga which marked the conclusion of the four-day Durga Puja festival.

The incident took place at around 2 pm near the office of Shillong Municipal Board when a group of persons started assaulting the cop after he prevented them from sleeping on the middle of the road when devotees were on a procession for immersing the idols at the Immersion Ghat in Umkhrah river, Polo.

The injured cop was identified as Flint Anderson Lapang (31) from Mawlai Nongpdeng. Flint was taken to the hospital after he sustained injury on the head.

Flint said that when he requested the people not to sleep on the road, a group of 5 to 6 youth started pulling and beating him up. According to him, most of them were already under the influence of alcohol and they even hurled abusive words at him.

Ghosh, who was one of the accused, was arrested from Khyndai Lad and investigation is on.
