Shillong, March 31, 2026: The State Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), Meghalaya, successfully organised an awareness programme on organ donation and transplantation at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences campus in Shillong. The event took the form of a marathon-cum-walkathon and witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 400 individuals.

Participants ranged widely in age, with the youngest runner being just 4 years old and the oldest 62, both of whom successfully completed the marathon, reflecting strong community engagement.

The marathon was flagged off by Prof. (Dr) Nalin Mehta, Director of NEIGRIHMS. Addressing the gathering, Prof. Mehta highlighted the urgent need for society to come forward and pledge for organ donation, stressing its importance in addressing the country’s growing organ shortage crisis.

The Joint Director of Health Services, Government of Meghalaya, spoke about the significant challenges faced by patients and their families, who are often compelled to travel to distant parts of India to access organ transplantation facilities.

Further underscoring the issue, the Medical Superintendent and Dean of NEIGRIHMS emphasised the necessity of establishing organ transplant services and facilities within the institute to better serve the region.

Adding a personal touch to the programme, two kidney donors shared their experiences, inspiring attendees and encouraging more people to consider organ donation.

Winners across various marathon categories were felicitated with prizes, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. R Hajong, Nodal Officer of SOTTO.
