Shillong, Oct 23: A state level training on the functioning of Voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) which will be used in the forthcoming Assembly elections in Meghalaya was launched here on Monday.

Meghalaya chief electoral officer F.R. Kharkongor who launched the training, said that after the state level awareness and training on using VVPAT with EVM will be followed by training in various districts of the state from October 27.

Kharkongor said that 110 VVPAT machines have been dispatched to Meghalaya by the Electronic Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) to be used creating awareness and training.

In the Assembly election to be held in February-March, 2018, VVPAT along with EVM will be used in all 3,082 polling stations spread across the 60 Assembly segments in the state.
A VVPAT is an independent verification system for EVMs designed to allow voters to verify whether the vote they cast has gone to the candidate of their choice.
Kharkongor said that with the Election Commission putting VVPAT into use along with EVM, voters could verify whether the vote they cast had gone or not in favour of the candidate of their choice.

He however warned that those who lodged false complaint by alleging that the VVPAT did not function correctly, such complainant would face legal action as per law if the complaint is found to be fabricated.
