Shillong June 28: The State PWD was asked to produce action taken report by the Public Accounts Committee of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on the construction of a temporary helipad at Umsawli in New Shillong township.
According to PAC member Zenith Sangma, the then HRD minister was supposed to lay the foundation of IIM in 2006-07 at Umsawli, and a temporary helipad was constructed for the purpose costing over Rs 42 lakh without calling any tender and this led to wasteful expenditure as the helipad was constructed temporarily on emergency basis.
He said that the PAC has observed that the construction of the helipad only for landing of VVIPs for only a day and non-utilisation of the same for the purpose.
The helipad was abandoned and the PWD department is not in a position to reply to the PAC on the wasteful expenditure.
Therefore, the PAC has asked the state PWD to make a study, and find out if it is worthy enough to make the helipad a permanent one.
