Shillong, October 8, 2025: In an unexpected yet cordial encounter, former Chief Minister of Meghalaya and former MLA of Ampati, Dr. Mukul Sangma, was stopped by Ri-Bhoi District Police during a routine vehicle checking drive along National Highway-6 around midnight on October 7.
According to reports, after his vehicle was flagged down, Dr. Sangma interacted with the Superintendent of Police (SP), Ri-Bhoi District, in what witnesses described as a respectful and friendly exchange. Far from being inconvenienced, Dr. Sangma reportedly appreciated the professionalism and diligence of the police personnel conducting the operation.
He commended the officers for their discipline, integrity, and commitment to public safety, calling such drives “a fine example of responsible and honest policing.”
“These checks are a testament to the officers’ dedication to their oath — to safeguard the welfare and safety of the people,” Dr. Sangma remarked, adding that such vigilance helps prevent accidents and discourage drunk driving.
The SP clarified that the vehicle checking operation was part of routine enforcement measures aimed at ensuring compliance with traffic and safety regulations, and not intended to cause any inconvenience to commuters.
The incident, involving a former Chief Minister and taking place around midnight, drew public attention among highway travelers and on social media. Meanwhile, Ri-Bhoi Police have stated that they continue to review and enhance their road safety and enforcement mechanisms in line with best policing practices.
