Synjuk Ki Dorbar Shnong Shillong West demands speedy implementation of drug policy

Govt notifies policy under DREAM to ensure drug free Meghalaya: Paul

Shillong June 27: Headmen under the banner of the Synjuk Ki Dorbar Shnong Shillong West on Thursday asked the state government to implement the State Drug Policy to tackle the danger of drugs in the state

A delegation of the Synjuk led by Congress MLA from Shillong West, Mohendro Rapsang met Social Welfare Minister Kyrmen Shylla requesting him to intervene into the matter.

“We request you to speed up the matter and implement the policy at the earliest,” the Synjuk said in a memorandum handed over to Shylla.

The delegation also informed that almost all localities in Shillong are facing this problem. According to them, though different localities and NGOs have tried their best to check and control the problem, but trafficking and drug use continued.

“Even police are helpless in this regard. If any drug trafficker, users are caught, they will be freed within no time, causing embarrassment to the authorities be it the police, organizations, durbar shnongs. The main reason for this is the lack of a strong and effective drug policy to tackle the menace,” the Synjuk said.

The Synjuk also supported the endeavor of the state government in framing the draft state drug policy, and hoped that with the coming of the policy, the state would be able to tackle and control the problem.

After the meeting, Social Welfare Minister said that he has informed the delegation that the state drug policy is still in the drafting stage in consultation with different line departments. “The policy will give a broad road map to the government in dealing with this problem. The government is also looking at setting up of de-addiction centres to rehabilitate drug users in the state,” the Minister said.
