Shillong, Sept 22, 2025 — The Synjuk Ki Rangbah Kur Ka Bri u Hynñiewtrep has announced that it will convene its Third General Dorbar on September 27, 2025, at Dinam Hall, Jaiaw Pdeng. The gathering will bring together heads of clans from across the Khasi-Jaintia Hills to deliberate on vital issues concerning the preservation of the community’s matrilineal system.
Speaking ahead of the event, Synjuk President Bah R. L. Kharpran stressed the importance of raising public awareness about the need to safeguard indigenous customs and traditions. “This Dorbar is an occasion to reflect on the values passed down from our ancestors and to renew our commitment to protect them for future generations,” he said.
Invitations have also been extended to the Khasi traditional chieftains — the Syiem and Lyngdoh of various Hima, as well as the Dolloi of the Elaka in Jaintia Hills — to share their reflections on the theme of the meeting.
Cultural advocate Bah Raphael Warjri highlighted the deep wisdom of the Khasi ancestors in establishing kinship through the mother, calling the maternal line “the foundation of our identity and the nurturing root of our society.”
Other senior members of the Synjuk, including Vice President Bah P. Syiem, Bah Will Shylla, and Bah J. L. Khongshei, reiterated the collective resolve to resist any attempt to weaken the community’s traditional institutions or disregard ancestral values.
The Dorbar will be held under the theme:
“We shall preserve the heritage of our forefathers, we shall awaken and uphold our nation.”
Organizers have urged all clan elders from every kur across the Khasi-Jaintia Hills to attend this crucial meeting and contribute to the dialogue on protecting the unique cultural heritage of the Hynniewtrep people.
