Four persons go missing as tunnel of Kupli Hydel Project burst, power supply to affect states in NE

Shillong, Oct 7: Supply of power to states in the North East will be affected after a tunnel of the Kupli Hydro Electric Project burst on Monday.

In this incident, four persons including three employees of NEEPCO have gone missing after the water tunnel got burst at Umrangso which cause massive flood at the power project site.

Reportedly, the four persons were engaged in repair works when the incident took place.

NEEPCO officials in Shillong admitted that the incident, adding that the bursting of the tunnel will affect the supply of electricity from the Kupli Hydel Electric Project to seven states in the North East.

The officials said that preliminary report suggested that the bursting of the tunnel was due to acidic water which caused the tunnel to get corroded.

“This will affect power supply to seven states in the North East,” one of the NEEPCO officials said.

The Kupli Hydro Electric Project generates around 200 MW.

It was reports that the employees who have gone missing were identified as Robert Baite, Prem Pal Balmiki, Joy Sing Timung (all Kupili Hydel project employees) and an employee of a firm involved repair work of the tunnel. The employees were doing some repair works when the incident occurred.

The tunnel used to carry water around 12000 litres/sec from the NEEPCO reservoir to the Kupli Hydro Power Project site.

After the bursting of the tunnel, massive flood occurred at the project site and nearby areas.

The missing employees were reportedly engaged in repair works when the incident took place.
