Govt bars supply of charcoal to Ferry Alloys in state

Shillong, Nov 1: Supply of charcoal to Ferry Alloy units in the state has been stopped after the state cabinet gave its approval to Meghalaya Charcoal (Control of Production, Storage, Trade and Transit) Amendment Rules, 2019 which was proposed by department of Forest and Environment.
Earlier, existing provisions of the Rules stated that the source charcoal should be only from registered producers of stockiest or through import.
“However now, the Cabinet has approved the amendment that the source of charcoal is only by importing from outside the state which means that charcoal produced locally will not be allowed for using in Ferro Alloy units. These industries have to procure charcoal from outside the state with immediate effect,” Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong told reporters after the cabinet meeting on Friday.
With this decision of the Cabinet, stockiest is not at all allowed now, and charcoal should be brought only from outside the state.
Tynsong however said that charcoal is still allowed for local consumption.
He said that the amendment to stop the supply of charcoal to ferry alloy units was due to the rampant felling of trees for making charcoal and sent them to industries.
