Govt Chief Whip pulls up MTDC for not implementing tourism projects

Shillong, Oct 10: Government chief whip, Marcuise N Marak has pulled the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) for not implementing the Rural Eco Tourism Circuit in Garo Hills sanctioned by the Centre at Rs 375.23 lakh.

Warning the government in his report, Marak said, “It is afraid that the project may get cancelled due to negligence/non-seriousness on the part of the implementing agency (MTDC).”

Marak conducted inspection in as many as 8 sites in different villages of East Garo Hills District on October 4 and 5.

Marak, who is also the MLA of Williamnagar constituency, said that in such a situation, the losers will be the people of all these villages and this may lead to many unpleasant circumstances, such as loss of peaceful atmosphere, which is now starting to return to the area.

He also suggested the state government to take up the matter very seriously by taking to task those responsible for the delay in the implementation of the project.

According to Marak, the proposal to set up Eco camps in villages has made many youth who have gone underground to come back into the mainstream.

“This has also raised high hopes among the people that the project would help raise their economy and keep their children away from the present evil effects. However on inspecting the villages, it was found out that the villagers of all these villages are losing faith as no sign of work was seen till date,” he said.

The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region had sanctioned last year Rs 375.21 lakh to the state government as first installment for implementing the project.
