Govt to take a call on re-opening of industrial sector

Shillong, Apr 13: The state government has directed the Commerce and Industries department to workout the modalities related to the proposal for reopening of the industrial sector in the state.

Informing this after the cabinet meeting on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the recent guidelines and advisories issued by the Government of India have left it to the states to decide on the matter.

“After discussing the pros and cons of reopening the industrial sector, the Cabinet has decided to direct the commerce and industries department to workout the modalities to know whether employees in Industrial units will be brought from outside the state,” he said.

Tynsong said that the cabinet also wanted to know whether those employees engaged by such industrial units have already left the state due to the COVID-19 lockdown and whether they are planning to employ only people from within the state.

According to him, if the industrial units are to bring the workforce from outside then this will only defeat the objective of imposing restriction on the inter-state movement to prevent spread of the novel coronavirus.

“It is only after receiving all these particulars, the cabinet will decide on whether reopen the industrial sector in the state,” the deputy chief minister said.
