Shillong | July 17: As Meghalaya observed the 190th death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem, civil society leaders, student organizations, and citizens gathered at Madan Iewrynghep, Shillong, to honor one of the most iconic freedom fighters of the Khasi Hills. The event, marked by floral tributes and solemn speeches, evolved into a call for justice, leadership, and protection of indigenous rights.
Legacy of Responsibility and Sacrifice
In his keynote address, Bah Kitboklang Nongphlang, President of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), said U Tirot Sing’s decision to rebel against British rule was not born out of a desire for power, but from a deep sense of duty.
“The royal throne was never about power for U Tirot Sing. It was about responsibility — to protect the people and the land,” said Nongphlang. “He willingly gave up that throne and chose to fight colonial injustice. True leadership is sacrifice.”
Nongphlang reminded the gathering that U Tirot Sing’s rebellion was not merely a historical event—it remains a continuing source of moral strength for the Khasi people, especially at a time when governance and accountability are under question.
Border Tensions and Government Inaction
Turning his focus to contemporary issues, Nongphlang raised the unresolved border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam, particularly the Mukroh incident, which saw violence erupt over territorial claims.
“Our people continue to die on their own land, and the government remains content with silence. Assam advances; Meghalaya hesitates,” he said, calling for decisive leadership and protection of vulnerable border communities.
NESO Calls for Action Beyond Symbolism
Also addressing the gathering, Bah Samuel Jyrwa, President of the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), voiced frustration at the lack of real progress on critical issues affecting the region.
“Are we truly free in our land?” Jyrwa asked. “Our youth face rising unemployment. People living in border areas live in fear. Our rights are theoretical, our governance questionable, and corruption unchallenged.”
He demanded the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya, along with a transparent employment policy, and immediate attention to long-standing territorial disputes.
Jyrwa criticized both the state and central governments for offering only symbolic tributes while failing to enact policies that meaningfully benefit the indigenous communities.
A Living Legacy, Not Just a Memory
The speakers agreed that commemorating U Tirot Sing must go beyond annual floral offerings. It should translate into persistent advocacy for justice, protection of indigenous identities, and strong governance rooted in people’s welfare.
“Tirot Sing’s legacy is not a relic,” said Jyrwa. “It is a living call to protect our land, our people, and our future.”
As the day’s event concluded with traditional songs and chants, the message rang clear: U Tirot Sing’s legacy is not just history—it is a mandate for action.
