Shillong, September 27, 2025 – The Synjuk Ki Rangbah Kur Ka Bri U Hynñiewtrep (Confederation of Clan Elders of the Land of the Hynñiewtrep) convened its Third General Dorbar on Saturday, reaffirming its mission to preserve and strengthen the traditional clan lineage system (kheiñ kur kheiñ kha) traced through the mother.
The Synjuk, founded on 7 January 2019 under the leadership of Bah H. S. Shylla during his tenure as Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), has consistently worked to safeguard indigenous social customs. Its efforts culminated in the passing of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Clan Lineage) Amendment Act, 2023. However, with challenges still persisting, the Third General Dorbar was called to deliberate on pressing issues and reaffirm the community’s resolve.
The Dorbar was chaired by eminent lawyer Robert June Kharjahrin, with Bah Strongpillar Kharjana, Chairman of the KHADC, serving as Chief Guest. In his address, Kharjana emphasized the vital role of the maternal uncle (kñi) in nurturing and guiding the younger generation, strengthening the clan, and serving as a role model for the lineage.
Among the dignitaries present were Bah M. B. Kharlukhi, Minister, Dorbar Hima Mylliem; Dr. K. M. Syiemlieh, Syiem Khynnah of Hima Nongkhlaw and Chairman of the Federation of Khasi States; former KHADC CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem; and clan leader Dr. B. P. S. Toi, who administered the oath of office to the newly elected executive members for the 2025–2028 term.
During the second session, clan elders from different regions – including Bah D. Donstan Khonglah from War Jaintia and Bah Ploster Syiem from Ri Bhoi – shared their insights on protecting indigenous customs from distortion or erosion.
The Dorbar also conducted elections for the new office bearers, with Dr. B. P. S. Toi overseeing the process. The assembly unanimously appointed and confirmed:
Bah R. L. Kharpran – President
Raphael Warjri – General Secretary
Bah Aristotle Lyngdoh, Bah Ploster Syiem, Bah D. Donstan Khonglah – Vice Presidents
Erland Sun – Treasurer
Rapionglang Blah – Spokesperson & Head of Media
Sixteen other elders were also inducted into the executive body of the Synjuk, strengthening its leadership for the years ahead.
The Third General Dorbar ended with a renewed pledge to protect, preserve, and promote the traditional matrilineal system, ensuring that the values of the Hynñiewtrep people are passed on to future generations.
