Shillong, June 26: The three Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) have welcomed the Centre’s move to include the ADCs under Article 280 of the Constitution.
This was expressed at a joint meeting of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) held in Shillong here on Wednesday to discuss on the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
After the meeting, KHADC deputy chief executive member, Pynïaid Sing Syiem told reporters that the meeting was inconclusive as the three ADCs have decided to meet again very soon before submitting a joint representation to the state government on the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule.
KHADC chairman Pynshngaiñlang N Syiem informed that the three ADCs have welcomed the decision of the Centre to include the ADCs under Article 280 of the Constitution, adding that once included under Article 280, the three ADCs will get regular funding directly from the Centre.
According to him, during the Congress-led UPA government, funds received by the ADCs were nominal since the decision was only taken at the Union Cabinet level.
He informed that issues related to transferring of more subjects and increasing the number of seats in the three ADCs were also discussed.
