Trinamool Congress demands independent enquiry into the killing of Cheristerfield Thangkhiew

Shillong, Sep 9: All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) legislator and leader of opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma has demanded an independent enquiry into the report of Justice T. Vaiphei enquiry commission probing into the circumstances leading to the killing of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.

“There should be an inquiry to find out exactly what and why has it happened,” Sangma said.

He also said that there was an independent enquiry to find if there was a criminal conspiracy.

Sangma also said that he does not accept the argument that the police did not know whether on the night of the incident if HNLC cadres were staying along with Thangkhiew.

“Do you expect that the intelligence of the Meghalaya police would be so incompetent to know whether any member of the of the organisation was there or not. I don’t accept it because of the high level of efficiency of our police force,” Sangma said.

The leader of opposition also said that in the past whenever there was a raid it was always during the dawn even as he added that it is part of the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

He asked why the SOP was not followed even as he refused to believe it was due to inefficiency.

According to Sangma if inefficiency was not the cause then it has to be looked at from the legal perspective.

Putting the question before the government, he asked, “Was there a criminal conspiracy to make this incident happen?”
