Shillong, Oct 9: National President of NPP and Tura Lok Sabha MP, Conrad K. Sangma on Monday addressed a meeting of the block committee at Tikrikilla in West Garo Hills district, where thousands of people attended the rally and pledged their support for the party in the upcoming Assembly election.
The meeting was convened to mobilise the party workers in the run-up to the 2018 Assembly election, and sensitised the people on how Congress-led government has failed to fulfill the promises to the electorates.
Prominent leaders who attended the meeting include former Minister, Manirul Islam Sarkar, MDC Augustine Marak and a host of district and block leaders.
The public of the area apprised the leaders on the poor road condition from Tikrikilla – Phulbari – Rajabala – Garobadha route and sought his intervention.
Conrad informed the gathering that he has already taken up the matter with the Centre and would initiate further steps to improve the road condition in the plain belt area, which is the lifeline of the people.
“We will pursue with the Central government to declare the road as National Highway, so that the people would benefit from good road communication. In the absence of a good road link, the people in plain belt have to suffer and administrative delivery and functioning of government offices becomes difficult”, he added.
He also alleged that due to failure of the Mukul Sangma-led state government, there has been lack of development in most parts of Meghalaya.
“The state government has failed to fulfill aspirations of the people of Meghalaya as a whole and Garo Hills in particular. The government makes hollow claims but the reality is all before our eyes to see. We have to ensure that in next year’s election, we would choose a party, which will not make only promises but would deliver,” Conrad said.
He informed the crowd that the party would come up with a report on how Mukul government has failed to deliver.
“We want to sensitise the people and enable them to take a conscious decision before they decide to vote. In an age of technology and information, people have to be empowered with information. We believe in transparency and accountability”, the Tura MP said.
He said that NPP was committed for the welfare of the people of the region and would engage with the Centre to derive maximum benefits for the people of Meghalaya, so that waves of development reach out to different nooks and conner of the state.
“The state government in the past five years has launched several programmes, which are aimed at leveraging upon livelihood of the people. The projects look beautiful in papers, but in reality, nothing has reached to the major chunk of the population”, Conrad said.
