Shillong Nov 21: Lok Sabha MP from Tura, Agatha Kongkal Sangma, and sister of Meghalaya chief minister, Conrad K Sangma and state’s home minister, James K Sangma, tied her nuptial knot with physician, Dr Patrick Rongma Marak at Tura on Thursday.
The marriage was solemnized at the Sacred Heart Shrine of the Catholic Church at Tura.
Bishop of Tura Diocese, Rev Andrew Marak led the celebration of the Holy Mass and solemnized the union of the couple in the presence of other priests.
The wedding of the 39-year old MP and former Union minister was attended by several politicians and prominent personalities.
Assam Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife, Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, Sikkim Chief Minister, P S Tamang, Meghalaya Assembly Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh, Leader of Opposition in Meghalaya Assembly, Mukul Sangma and other ministers and MLAs from various states of the country attended the wedding.
Patrick is the doctor at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi congratulated Agatha and her husband on her wedding.
“Congratulations to Agatha and Patrick. Best wishes to the newly-weds. Congratulations also to your family on this happy and special occasion. My friend, late PA Sangma, would have been delighted,” the Prime Minister tweeted in response to a post by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
Other Union ministers including Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Kiren Rijiju, DoNER Minister, Jitendra Singh and other personalities used their twitter handle to convey their best wishes to the couple.
Prior to the marriage, Conrad paid respect to his father late PA Sangma along with Himanta Biswa Sarwa and other leaders.
“Seek blessings from my late Father before Agatha exchange her wedding vows with Patrick. As every parent, he would’ve been proud to walk her down the aisle and we wish he were here today,†Conrad tweeted.
He also thanked Sarma for accompanying him in paying respect to his late father.
Conrad also posted a series of tweets along with photographs of the newly-wed couple and as he congratulated his sister.
“Congratulations to the newlyweds! May God bless their union as they begin their journey together. Such a proud and happy moment for our family,†Conrad said.
Agatha is the youngest daughter of former Lok Sabha Speaker, late PA Sangma.
Agatha’s eldest sister, Christie who lives abroad, also attended the wedding.
On their special occasion, the newly married couple did not forget about the mother earth. In a unique gesture, the newlyweds promoted the plantation of saplings, as they presented return gift to guests and others with a heart-shape seed paper.
The seed paper that was inscribed with words, “this is seed paper and can be planted. Please plant it to remember our special day.â€
